How to Apply
The Hoya-Spartan program uses a common application between the two halves of the program. Students wishing to apply for this program should fill out an application here and be sure to check the box for the Hoya Spartan program.
Please also be aware that only students who are attending both halves of the institute will be eligible for placement in this lab. Several years ago we had some flexibility in adding students who were not participating for all 7 weeks. Unfortunately this will no longer be the case. Only students attending all 7 weeks will be in the Hoya Spartan lab and will only debate with students also in that lab.
Why choose the Hoya Spartan Scholars?
A Strong Faculty: Students attending the Hoya Spartan Scholars will work with some of the finest high school and college coaches in the country, including NDCA national championship coach Bill Batterman, three-time NDT winning coach at MSU Will Repko, and NDCA national championship coach Maggie Berthiaume. Please visit our faculty page for more information on these and other faculty members!
A Creative Curriculum: Too many workshops have moved senior labs towards a heavy-research focus and away from actual practice debating. The Hoya Spartan Scholars program intends to have daily debating exercises throughout the seven-week program. It is our belief that the best way to prepare against advanced strategy or unfamiliar critical theory is to repeatedly simulate debating against such arguments. If one’s goal is to defeat the strongest competition, there is simply no substitute for practice. The GDS-SDI staff records speeches throughout the seven-week session – allowing debaters to get a first-hand look at their progress. Every evening (from the close of lab until bed-check), the camp will offer an optional question-answer session. Our goal is to let students define their own curriculum for these sessions, as well as to provide them an opportunity to interact with our diverse faculty.
